The kegel exercise strengthens the pubococcygeal muscle. For short we call it the PC muscle or the kegel muscle. This muscle is like a hammock located between the pubic bone and the tail bone and is about three thirds of an inch. It is firmly held in place and wrapped around the vagina, urethra and rectum as strong muscle bands. It is the muscle that holds up the bladder, the uterus and the rectum. A weak and saggy muscle can cause a prolapse uterus. That’s when the uterus is actually falling down into her vagina. When she coughs or sneezes, urine leaks out. In worst instances, this could cause a hysterectomy or the removal of the uterus.
Dr. Arnold Kegel, the one who discovered the exercise actually recommmended contracting the muscle 300 times a day for life! That’s around 5 minutes of continuous flexing of the muscle. You need to concentrate in squeezing the muscle all the way up and deep into the vagina. When you flex the muscle you should feel the tightening form your rectum all the way forward moving to the clitoris. To check if you are doing it right, when you urinate, hold it midstream, if you are able to do it, that’s the correct muscle.
The benefits of this exercise is trememdous. You would like to keep this muscle in tack, well supported and strong to be able to experince pleasurable love making with your husband, a healthy well being and to be able to enjoy giving birth to your baby.
