In Washing Your Hands…

In my last Prepared Childbirth Class I taught my students how to properly wash their hands, especially after coming from the comfort room and before pumping their breast to collect milk. In reminded them to donate breast milk in the event they have an over supply of it but must make sure they have no illness when they donate. We normally donate breast milk to premature babies who cannot take in formula.

So in washing your hands, sing Happy Birthday twice. This will insure that your hands are cleaner than usual. Better still, if you have a surgeon friend, ask him to demonstrate it to you. Sing it silently or people might think you’re nuts!

Weekly, How Does My Baby Grow?

WEEK 1-2
Mommy, you and daddy’s health are so important when forming me! Did you know that your doctor starts to measure your estimated due date from the very first day of your menstrual cycle? I am actually not made yet.

WEEK 3
Finally, Daddy’s sperm has fertilized me, the egg, and my gender is already determined! I am alive! Jesus knows me by name!

WEEK 4
I finally found my way into my home, Mommy. The spotting you see is normal, it is only me burrowing myself into your uterus. Although not all women experience it.

WEEK 5
My baby, do you know that by now you have developed three layers! The ectoderm, that will develop into the nervous system. The mesoderm that will develop into the reproductive system, kidneys, heart, bones, muscles. The third is a simple tube called the endoderm. This will later on develop into the bladder, pancreas, liver and intestines.

WEEK 6
Mommy, my heart has started beating! I am now called an embryo and am 1/17 of an inch long.
I feel most of my organs beginning to form, my eyes, my ears! My umbilical cord is lengthening and I’m stating to grow four buds that will form into my arms and legs!

WEEK 7
Mommy, I feel so many changes going on. My arms and legs are getting longer and my fingers and toes are starting to form. Even my brain is growing fast. My eyes have lenses and my nose are forming nostrils. My intestines are growing. My pancreas and bronchi are forming for my lungs! Mommy, I’m getting excited! I’m starting to take form!

Looking for Baby’s Breastfeeding Cues

Breastfeeding should always be when the baby is ready to do so. In him is built an instinct, and internal rythym and the skill to breastfeed. We need to observe our baby keenly to know when he is ready. He will give us certain cues to watch out for. An experienced mother through time have learned these cues. A new mother will find it easier to breastfeed her baby when he is calm, quiet and ready to feed contrary to an upset, crying, too hungry, overly stimulated, exhausted, not hungry baby. One of the most obvious cues when you are carrying your baby is when he turns to your side of the breast. Some may even throw themselves to the side of the breast and try to position to breastfeed. His mouth will keep opening as though trying to reach for the breast. If the baby is laying in his bed, he may show you his interest to breastfeed by sucking on his fingers, his fists or the blanket, some even make a sound. Others smack their lips and repeatedly stick their tongue out. Some babies squirm from side to side while they open their mouths. This may result to restlessness and eventually crying which makes latching and positioning very difficult for a new mother. You need to be able to catch his cues early so as not to frustrate him. Crying is a last minute cue. Babies have their way of body language. Their mothers have to observe them carefully. If the mother is not sure he wants to breastfeed, try it anyway. A baby who interested, will not suckle.

A New Way to Latch Baby on the Breast

Much of the proper way to latch came from people who understood breastfeeding and from keenly observing mothers and babies breastfeed together and getting deeper insights from them.

This effective way to latch is different from how it was taught to us many years ago. When the baby latches, his mouth takes as much areola as he can inside his mouth. The difference is in his lower lip where it takes more of the breast than the upper lip. The lower lip is flanged outward and not tucked in. His tongue is is also out pressing against the breast towards his palate. Another difference is in his nose. The chin touches the mothers breast and is somehow buried in the breast while the nose does not touch the breast. Only when the mother has very big breasts might it touch, but not usually. The third difference is the tummy to tummy position. It you are to look at the baby from the mother’s point of view, his head is slightly turned upward and his lower body is closer to the mother than his upper body, not completely flat against her.
