Hi everyone! Finally I am able to get a little bit of free time for myself. Paul’s doing all the work in the meantime. It’s nice to read everyone’s story, but surprisingly most of you went through CS. I was looking forward to reading an ‘all-natural’ story; I honestly couldn’t go through it myself, epidural became my best friend. Hehehe!

Here’s my story:

May 11: visit to the doctor – she mentioned that I wouldn’t give birth within the next four days ‘coz the baby’s head hasn’t engaged yet.

May 12, 6pm: Bloody Show – I called my doctor to inform her and told me if it looked like my first day of menstruation, then it should be fine and it’ll probably take about 1-2 more days before I have to go to the hospital. I just have to relax and monitor the contractions if it came. At 6:30pm, I started feeling tired and felt a few contractions that seemed like menstrual cramps. After dinner, I went to bed to rest and started counting the contractions. It came every 5 minutes that lasted for about a minute. The pain was still bearable but I was getting a bit anxious and worried ‘coz I didn’t know how much of the blood from a ‘Bloody Show’ was considered normal. At around 10pm, I went to the toilet and found more blood that really got me worrying. It didn’t look like my first day of menstruation anymore. So I told Paul to ready our stuff as I take my last shower (yes, I’m doing the Chinese geh-lai “no-shower-for-a-month” thing.. yucky! But I have 2 more days to go).

10:30pm: I was still feeling ok. We parked the car and walked all the way to the maternity admitting rooms of St. Luke’s QC. I told the attending nurses that I was a bit worried of the bloody show and just wanted to make sure that the baby was still doing ok. Sometime while in the admitting room, the contractions were starting to feel more painful and came around 3-4 minutes. I started to do the “pant-pant-blow or the blow-blow-blow” Chiqui taught us. They checked me and I was only 1-2cm. Baby’s heartbeat was normal also. So they sent us home with an explanation that it’s still early and, once again, I would probably have to come back 1-2 days later.

May 13, 12am: We checked out and went home. On the way home, which only took 10 minutes from the hospital, I had about 3-4 contractions! It was coming in faster and more intense. At home, as the contractions came, we tried different positions we learned from Chiqui but didn’t really help. Standing, sitting, lying on the bed… nothing worked. And when some of the contractions that came, I even had to go to the toilet, which strangely I found a bit comforting.

2am: Paul wanted to get some shut-eye as we were advised that we won’t have to go back to the hospital for 1-2 more days! So he left me alone to deal with the pain. It was getting exhausting as my contractions came every 2-3 minutes. I dozed off a few times between contractions, probably 20-30 seconds of sleep only. And when it came, I started to run for the toilet. There I counted each “blow-blow-blow”, and consistently at the 40th blow, the contractions would subside. I was even banging on the bathroom wall while I blow; our pet Mini Dachshund heard the banging from downstairs and started to bark while I pounded on the wall, which kept Paul from sleeping. Hahaha! This went on until around 4am. At this time, I was already doing some shouting as it started to become unbearable. The pain was concentrated at my lower back. I felt like I was being ripped apart.

4:20am: We went back to the hospital! This time we had to valet the car as there was no way I can walk from the parking area all the way to the admitting room. They checked me and I was already 6cm!!! And to think everybody was saying it’ll take 1-2 more days!! Baby’s heartbeat was still normal. His position was also normal (I wonder why I had all the pain concentrated on my lower back when his back was not against my back). Contractions came every 2 minutes and it was really unbearable! At this time I asked for an epidural.

6am: After they gave me the epidural, I heard one of the nurses saying “uy… nakasmile na siya”, while they wheeled me back to the Lamaze room. I smiled even more. It was instant relief! But I started to get uncontrollable chills as a side-effect from the epidural. It was the same side-effect my sister had during her first child and she hated it so she opted for Lamaze for her second child. She encouraged me to do the same. But honestly, I would rather have those chills than the pain that came every 2 minutes. It was too exhausting for me.

8am-10:45am: My doctor arrived and started checking all the stats. I was already around 7-8cm but my water bag hasn’t broken yet. My contractions were getting weaker and the baby’s heartbeat slowed down a few times. So she opted to break my water bag. After doing so, baby’s heartbeat returned to normal but my contractions were still weak. My doctor gave me Oxytocin to help my contractions. I still kept getting those chills. I also started feeling uncomfortably on my left butt cheek whenever the contractions came. The anesthesiologist made an adjustment on my epidural, thinking that the drug was not spreading to the lower left part of my body. After a few contractions more, I started to feel pain. She added more drug to make sure that it gets to my left side, but it’s not working. I was actually feeling pain while under an epidural! I can tell when a contraction was coming way before they see it in the monitor. At around 10am, I felt like I was going through the pain of labor all over again! I was panting and blowing, my goodness… when will it stop??!? I asked for more but the anesthesiologist said that she maxed out the drug already, I shouldn’t be feeling anything anymore. At this point, there’s nothing they can do.

10:45am: Thank goodness I hit 10cm! My doctor taught me a few “practice pushes” before they wheeled me to the delivery room. The uncontrollable chills got even worse as I got scared. And the pain on my lower left butt cheek got worse also. As I started to push, my doctor asked Paul to put on a sterilized suit so he can cut the cord. I didn’t need him anyway since we were not doing Lamaze. I grabbed on to the nurse/doctor who was pushing on my tummy while I push. Sometime during that, I notice this nurse/doctor was murmuring in between my contractions, during my resting period. I looked at her and saw that she was actually on her cellphone talking while her hands were on my tummy waiting for the next contraction! I looked at my doctor, I saw her looking at that nurse/doctor too. I dunno what happened after that but later on she was replaced by another nurse/doctor who seemed a little bit petite than the previous one. But my golly when she pushed my tummy, I felt like all my guts were gonna come out! On the next contraction that came, she pushed so hard, and I pushed harder too like my head was gonna pop.

May 13, 11:18am: Daniel was born. 7lbs, 19 inches (50cm). I felt an overwhelming feeling of joy when I heard him cry. Everything was worth it!

(Reuters Health) – Could a glass of wine a day early in pregnancy yield better behaved kids? Maybe, according to results of a new study.

Megan Brooks
NEW YORK
Wed Jun 9, 2010 4:25pm EDT

The new findings, published in the obstetrics and gynecology journal BJOG, are based on 14 years’ worth of data in the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study.

The women provided information on their weekly drinking habits during early pregnancy: 59 percent of women reported no drinking; 20 percent reported occasional drinking (up to one standard drink per week); 15 percent reported light drinking (2-6 drinks per week); 3 percent moderate drinking (7-10 per week); and 2 percent reported heavy drinking (11 or more per week).

The behavior of 2,370 children was assessed every 2-3 years between the ages of 2 and 14.

Compared with mothers who did not drink in the first 3 months of pregnancy, those who were light drinkers during this time had better behaved children over 14 years, as indicated by better scores on a standard checklist used by psychologists.

Children of light to moderate drinkers early in pregnancy had a “clinically meaningful” lower risk of internalizing behavior (in which negativity is directed inwards, for example depression) and externalizing behavior (such as aggression), than children of nondrinkers.

As an example, at the age of 14, 127 children of nondrinkers had internalizing problems (14 percent) and 159 (18 percent) had externalizing problems. By comparison, among light drinkers, only 32 children (10 percent) had internalizing problems and 45 (13 percent) had externalizing problems.

Research has shown that moderate drinkers are mentally healthier than both abstainers and addicts, which could help explain these findings, the researchers say. There may biological reasons as well; namely, low doses of alcohol in pregnancy may help calm the mother-to-be, perhaps yielding calming kids.

“Given what we know about the dangers of frequent heavy consumption of alcohol in pregnancy, these results may initially appear surprising,” Robinson admitted. For example, fetal alcohol syndrome is a well-described condition. “However, we need to be cautious about generalizing the effects of a heavy alcohol intake to a light consumption of alcohol — they are not equal.”

Robinson also noted that some studies have found a light consumption of alcohol in pregnancy to be associated with positive cognitive outcomes for children. “But the light-to-moderate intake results tend to be overshadowed by the focus on harm at the excessive intake end of the scale,” she said.

With about half of all pregnancies in Australia being unplanned (with similar figures for the US and UK), the current findings should be reassuring to women, Robinson said.

“Women may be drinking alcohol in small amounts prior to recognition of the pregnancy and we feel these data highlight that it is unlikely that this has harmed their unborn child’s mental health,” she said.

“Women should not feel guilty or anxious about low-level drinking effects prior to recognition of the pregnancy. However, binge and large alcohol intake should still be avoided as this does have potential for harm,” Robinson emphasized.

Nonetheless, Robinson does not advise women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant to head to the local pub. She also emphasized that child behavior is “just one of many outcomes that might be assessed with regards to alcohol consumption during pregnancy. While our study found light drinking during pregnancy was not associated with increased risk for the child, national guidelines recommend the safest choice is to avoid alcohol once the pregnancy is known.”

“The best option,” Robinson said, “is for women to ask their obstetric care provider (obstetrician, midwife, family doctor, etc) and work with that person on their decision regarding alcohol.”

It’s the hottest summer ever in 10 years! The question is, “Is sunbathing dangerous for the pregnant mom?” Follow the same rule as you would when you are not pregnant and take more precaution. Of course you have the problems of sun burn and skin cancer, skin discoloration, wrinkles… Apply a strong sun screen lotion. Remember to read the labels and if you are not sure, ask your OB. Everything you spread on your skin reaches your baby. Wear a hat or use an umbrella when walking out doors in a hot summer day. Staying too long under the sun can elevate your core temperature and so that of your baby and this could be harmful for him. Drink lots of liquid to hydrate yourself! Do other fun activities with your friends in doors. You can be pregnant and still be enjoy the out doors just remember to take extra care of your self.

20100610
When I ask my students what comes to their minds when I say the word, “childbirth”, they often say “pain!” ugh! Many perceive childbirth as the most painful physical experience any one can ever encounter in life. Some childbirth educators feel they need to cover up the pain and call it by another name to disguise it. Some call it contractions or some other name. I believe we should call it as it is, the pain of labor. For how else can they relate to it if we don’t try to explain how it feels like? We need to prepare the preggy moms and tell them what to expect. I tell my students that their body knows what to do. They need to allow it to do its job while trying their best to relax. The more they relax, the faster labor will be. After all, the secret in being able to get by labor is to relax. Believe me, it is easier said than done. I’m sure the moms would attest to that. It’s a lot of work but other moms were able to do it! So, the method does work! How would you feel if someone is trying to hurt you physically? Do you think you could relax? I remember one student told me, ” I know you said it was going to be painful, but not that painful!” I was struck by what she said. It’s true, how can we best prepare the would be moms so that they could best benefit from their birth? So that they would have a meaningful experience? On the other hand, surprisingly, I’ve had a few mothers tell me about their birth experience to be painless. I had that in one of my birth’s. I was having contractions but could not believe I was already in labor, up to the time I was 9cm dilated! Believe me not, I had no pain. It was difficult to know for sure if I was in labor or not, apart from my OB’s internal examination, because I could not relate to my body, It’s difficult if there is no pain. As a matter of fact, I had to put my hand on my belly each time during a contraction to ask my O.B if she thought that was a contraction. In the past births I’ve had, the pain got worst and the contractions got closer and longer. It was easier to tell where I was at. But this particular birth was painless. I could not help think that perhaps this was how we were originally meant to give birth before Eve was cursed in the Garden of Eden to have birth pangs. I didn’t know how it felt like and what it was all about, nor even believed it until I experienced it myself. Up to this day, I am still puzzled and don’t know how to explain why I had no pain. Could it be that my baby was in the proper position and presentation? Could it be that I was ready emotionally, physically, spiritually and psychologically? After having two babies, I was very relaxed and had no fear on the third. That may have also helped. Anyway what ever kind of birth and with who ever woman, it will always be a special and memorable experience.

Hi, everyone!

Ave, thanks for sharing your experience. Congratulations! Welcome to Motherhood! It’ll definitely rock your world! Welcome, Maica Anessa. She looks like her mom. And it seems like she has a strong neck!

My first birth was a natural delivery with no complications. I expected the same with my second. Little did I know that I was in for a surprise…

I started my maternity leave on May 17. That morning I wanted to go to Manila with Pepe to “kill time”. (Pepe works in Manila while we’re based in Batangas.) I wasn’t due til the 28th. But he advised against it because, just 2 days ago, while driving back to Batangas, he got stuck in a 4-hour jam. He was scared of being in a middle of traffic while in labor. Fortunately I agreed. That same night I went to the hospital in Lipa.

My contractions started at around 7pm. I was giving our 5-year old daughter a bath when I felt the initial discomfort. I thought I was just tired. I rested in our room. The discomfort continued. I recognized the labor contractions. I sent a text message to Pepe telling him to leave the office ASAP. He replied by texting, “Really?” Can you believe it?!?! Hahaha! I forced myself to stay calm. I finished dinner, took a bath, prepared the ice chips and went to the hospital.

To my utter surprise, after just 5 minutes, Pepe arrived in the ER! It took him a little over an hour to go from Eastwood to Batangas. Crazy driver! When my OB examined me I was already at 5cm. The progress was really quick. In 2 hours I was half way there. She kept telling me that the second baby is always the fastest. Doesn’t matter if you have 2, 5 or 10 children. Doesn’t seem to have any explanation…

I was immediately connected to the IV and wheeled into the labor room. The contractions were bearable. I was happy with the thought that it was almost over… Wrong! We were timing the contractions while listening to piano instrumental of Air Supply songs. It helped calm me down. We were doing well until I reached 8cm. By that time the pain was becoming a little too much. But my OB said to just wait it out. Just 2 more cms to go. After an hour, I was still at 8cm. The contractions were coming every 5 minutes and were lasting a minute each. I was already dreading the next one because it was really painful. Then I had a sudden throbbing headache! I asked for epidural but the anaesthesiologist said we had to find out why I was having a headache! WAAAAHHHH!!! It was too much to bear at that time. I guess he eventually took pity on me and gave me the epidural. That put me to sleep for 2 hours. Unfortunately, when I woke up I was still at 8cm.

My OB said there was something wrong. Maybe the chord was around the baby’s neck. We had to do a CS. I couldn’t accept it. Not after 9 hours of labor! I said that if the baby was not in distress and if it didn’t put me at risk then I’m willing to wait. We waited for another hour. Still no progress. They wheeled me into the OR.

I was crying and shivering all throughout the surgery. My mom had 5 CS and I clearly remember her recovery periods. It seemed like she was in so much pain and I dreaded it. But, just like Ave said, when you hear your baby cry, nothing else matters. What was even marvelous were those magic words… “IT’S A BOY!” Coming from a family of 5 girls, we’ve always prayed for a boy. It seemed like a lifetime of prayers was finally answered.

Joaquim Costa was born at 5:46 AM, May 18, 2010 at 6lbs. The culprit: eyebrow presentation.

They put me to sleep after the baby was delivered. It took them another 2 hours to sew me up. Because we had waited too long and I was internally examined too many times, my uterus was battered. It had already started bleeding. So now I have two wounds. Nonetheless, I was out of the hospital in 2 days. I’ve recovered quickly thanks to Joaquim’s very predictable schedule. He wakes up almost exactly every 3 hours. I don’t feel like I’ve just given birth. Almost no sleepless nights! It’s a miracle!!!

Two weeks after a CS, I’m going up and down the stairs, giving Joaquim and Anita a bath, fixing up in the house… I feel normal again but still taking it easy.

There’s still so much to tell but I’ll stop now. Hope to hear your own love stories…

Regards,

Frances and Pepe
